Deel
Global payroll and compliance for international teams and contractors
What it does
Deel is the global payroll, contractor management, and Employer of Record (EOR) platform for companies hiring across borders. If you want to hire a designer in Argentina, an engineer in Poland, or pay a consultant in India without setting up a foreign entity, Deel does it. It handles contracts localized to each country, compliant payroll, tax filings, benefits, and even background checks and equipment shipping. Two products matter most: the contractor product (free-ish, cheap, fast) and the EOR product (expensive, powerful, hires full employees in countries where you don't have an entity). Competitors: Remote, Rippling, Papaya Global.

Integrates with
QuickBooks, Xero, BambooHR, Slack, Zapier
Who this fits
- Remote-first startups hiring globally without foreign entities
- US-based companies with international contractors on payroll
- Agencies with team members across LATAM, EU, or Southeast Asia
- Series A-C SaaS startups hiring the best global talent regardless of location
- Companies opening a new market and hiring 1-3 employees there (EOR beats setting up a subsidiary)
- Founders paying international contractors currently via wire transfers or Wise (Deel adds compliance)
- HR teams tired of managing 5 different local payroll providers
Who it does NOT fit
- Domestic-only US businesses with only W-2 employees in one state (Gusto is cleaner and 90% cheaper)
- Solo founders with 0 contractors (nothing to manage)
- Businesses that need heavy on-the-ground HR (someone in Buenos Aires having a workplace dispute needs a local HR firm, not just Deel)
- Restaurants, medspas, trades - domestic hourly staff needs. Gusto, Homebase, or Paylocity
- Enterprises with 500+ international employees and existing subsidiary structures (they built infrastructure that competes with Deel; Papaya may fit better for pure payroll)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- **Contractor-to-employee misclassification risk**: A country determines your "contractor" is really an employee. Deel's standard Contractor product does not protect you. Deel Contractor of Record ($325/mo) or full EOR ($599/mo) does. Do not save the difference and eat the risk.
- **Complex country compliance**: Some countries (Brazil, Argentina, India) have local rules that even Deel's playbook does not perfectly cover. Real local counsel remains worth it for edge cases.
- **Overuse for pure US operations**: US PEO at $125/mo per employee is 2x Gusto's Simple tier. Do not put a domestic US team on Deel unless there's a global reason.
- **Support tickets on obscure countries**: Deel's response times are fine on top-30 countries. Niche jurisdictions can take days.
- **Integration gaps with older HRIS**: Newer HRIS tools sync cleanly. Legacy on-prem tools may need custom work.

Otto’s take on this tool
> Example: "For your 12-person remote SaaS startup with 3 US W-2 employees and 9 contractors across Argentina, Portugal, and India, Deel Contractor Premium at $49/mo per contractor lands you at $441/mo for the international team. Contracts are localized, tax forms are auto-generated, and Deel handles the currency conversion so your ops person stops babysitting Wise transfers. Keep Gusto for the 3 US W-2 employees, that stack is cleaner than trying to run everything through Deel's US PEO."
