How to set up Wix

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Easy. A usable first site in about an hour using a template or the AI builder. Getting a site that feels genuinely custom (not "obviously a Wix template") takes more design effort, several hours to a

Read these before you start

  • Wix sites are effectively a one-way door — there is no clean export to another platform. Choosing Wix is a long-term platform decision, not a trial you can walk away from without rebuilding
  • The free tier displays Wix ads and a wix.com subdomain, which is not acceptable for any business presenting itself professionally — budget for at least the Combo tier from day one
  • SEO tools are genuinely decent for a small local business but Wix historically lagged WordPress on deep technical SEO control; that gap has narrowed significantly but verify current capability against the specific SEO needs before ruling WordPress out
  • E-commerce on Wix is fine for a small catalog (under a few hundred SKUs) but becomes noticeably clunkier than Shopify as inventory, variants, and shipping rules complexity grows
  • Third-party app/plugin ecosystem is smaller than WordPress's, so a specific integration need may simply not exist as a native Wix app

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Wix account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Wix signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Wix pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Wix into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Google Analytics, Mailchimp, Facebook Pixel, Wix Bookings (native), Wix Stores (native e-commerce, limited scale), Zapier (via Wix Automations for some triggers).. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Wix deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Wix - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Recommend Wix when: the user is a solo owner or small local business needing a professional site fast, especially trades, real estate agents, med spas, and consultants who value speed and built-in booking over deep customization. Do NOT recommend for serious e-commerce scale (Shopify wins) or for anyone who anticipates needing to migrate platforms later (the export problem is real and permanent). Do NOT recommend the free tier as a real business presence — it reads as unprofessional. Pairs with ...

Pricing you'll hit

- Free: Wix branding/ads shown, wix.com subdomain, 500MB storage — fine for testing only - Combo: $17/mo — custom domain, ads removed - Unlimited: $24/mo — 10GB storage, site booster tools for SEO - Business: $32/mo — online payments, e-commerce features - Higher e-commerce and enterprise tiers exist above Business for larger stores - Domain and business email are frequently sold as separate add-o...
