Wix
Website builder for creating professional websites without coding
What it does
Wix is a drag-and-drop website builder aimed at small businesses and beginners who want a professional-looking site without hiring a developer or learning code. Pick a template, drag elements onto the page, publish. It handles hosting, a built-in SEO checklist, basic e-commerce, and booking tools out of the box. Wix's AI site builder (answer a few questions, get a generated starting site) has narrowed the gap with Squarespace's more curated design aesthetic while keeping Wix's broader feature set (booking, blog, basic store) in one place.

Who this fits
- Solo owners and small local businesses (trades, real estate agents, med spas, consultants) who need a professional site fast without hiring a designer
- Freelancers and creatives building a portfolio site
- Businesses that need built-in booking (Wix Bookings) alongside the website itself
- Anyone comfortable with a template-first, drag-and-drop workflow over hand-coded control
Who it does NOT fit
- Businesses needing serious e-commerce scale (large catalogs, complex shipping/tax logic) — Shopify is the correct tool
- Teams that need pixel-precise custom design or a component-based dev workflow — Webflow or a coded site wins there
- Anyone planning to migrate platforms later — Wix sites are notoriously difficult to export; you're choosing Wix largely for good
- SEO-critical content sites needing deep technical control (custom schema, advanced redirects, server-level control) — WordPress or a headless setup is more flexible
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Wix sites are effectively a one-way door — there is no clean export to another platform. Choosing Wix is a long-term platform decision, not a trial you can walk away from without rebuilding
- The free tier displays Wix ads and a wix.com subdomain, which is not acceptable for any business presenting itself professionally — budget for at least the Combo tier from day one
- SEO tools are genuinely decent for a small local business but Wix historically lagged WordPress on deep technical SEO control; that gap has narrowed significantly but verify current capability against the specific SEO needs before ruling WordPress out
- E-commerce on Wix is fine for a small catalog (under a few hundred SKUs) but becomes noticeably clunkier than Shopify as inventory, variants, and shipping rules complexity grows
- Third-party app/plugin ecosystem is smaller than WordPress's, so a specific integration need may simply not exist as a native Wix app

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Wix when: the user is a solo owner or small local business needing a professional site fast, especially trades, real estate agents, med spas, and consultants who value speed and built-in booking over deep customization. Do NOT recommend for serious e-commerce scale (Shopify wins) or for anyone who anticipates needing to migrate platforms later (the export problem is real and permanent). Do NOT recommend the free tier as a real business presence — it reads as unprofessional. Pairs with Wix Bookings for appointment-based businesses and Mailchimp for basic email marketing.
