Productivity - Setup Guide

How to set up SEMrush

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Easy for daily use, Hard for real strategy. Signup and first keyword report in 10 minutes. Building a real SEO strategy using the tool (site audit remediation, competitor gap analysis, content briefs)

Read these before you start

  • Traffic estimates for competitors are directional, not exact. Don't quote them to clients as gospel
  • Backlink database is strong but Ahrefs is still slightly ahead in freshness/depth
  • Local SEO features require the Local add-on
  • API is Business+ only and separately metered
  • Rank tracking keyword limits are hard caps. Fills up fast on multi-market/multi-language sites
  • Historical data on Pro tier is limited. Guru+ is the real historical view

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your SEMrush account

Sign up at the link below. Card required for the paid tier - most plans include a trial period; check the pricing section on this page first so you know what you're committing to.

    Open SEMrush signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If SEMrush pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire SEMrush into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Google Analytics, GA4, Google Search Console, Google Ads, Google My Business, Meta Ads, HubSpot, Zapier, WordPress, Trello, Looker Studio, native REST API (Business+), Chrome extension.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how SEMrush deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in SEMrush - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Recommend SEMrush when: user is an SEO agency, marketing team doing SEO + PPC, ecommerce brand, or B2B SaaS marketer; business_size is 2+ people; pain_point is "we need to see what competitors rank for" or "we need to plan content by keyword opportunity." Pairs with Google Search Console, Google Analytics, WordPress, and a content workflow tool. Do NOT recommend for local-only businesses (BrightLocal is cheaper), backlink-only workflows (Ahrefs), or teams doing zero organic. Ahrefs is the direct...

Pricing you'll hit

- Pro: ~$139/mo, 5 projects, 500 keywords tracked, 10,000 results per report - Guru: ~$249/mo, 15 projects, 1,500 keywords, historical data, content marketing platform - Business: ~$499/mo, 40 projects, 5,000 keywords, API access, PLA analytics, share of voice - Enterprise/Custom: quote, higher limits, dedicated support Add-ons like Semrush .Trends, Local, Agency Growth Kit, and Enterprise SEO st...
