SEMrush

All-in-one SEO and digital marketing toolkit

What it does

SEMrush is a full-stack SEO and competitive intelligence platform. Keyword research, backlink analysis, site audits, rank tracking, competitor traffic estimates, PPC keyword and ad research, content marketing tools, position tracking, and market analysis. The differentiator vs Ahrefs is the paid-search intelligence (ad copy, keyword bids, competitor Google Ads) and market research modules. If your business is doing SEO + paid + content and you need one tool that covers all three, SEMrush is the one most agencies pick.

Integrates with

Google Analytics, Google Search Console, WordPress

Who this fits

  • SEO agencies and consultants managing multiple client sites
  • Marketing teams doing SEO + PPC + content in one budget
  • Ecommerce brands running Google Shopping and SEO
  • B2B SaaS marketing teams doing keyword-driven content strategy
  • Founders self-serving SEO before hiring a marketer

Who it does NOT fit

  • Local services businesses that just need Google Business Profile management (BrightLocal)
  • Teams focused only on backlinks (Ahrefs edges out on backlink data)
  • Enterprise brands with in-house SEO tooling
  • Users who only need rank tracking (Nightwatch, AccuRanker, cheaper)
  • Anyone whose marketing is 100% paid social (no SEO relevance)

Pricing

- Pro: ~$139/mo, 5 projects, 500 keywords tracked, 10,000 results per report - Guru: ~$249/mo, 15 projects, 1,500 keywords, historical data, content marketing platform - Business: ~$499/mo, 40 projects, 5,000 keywords, API access, PLA analytics, share of voice - Enterprise/Custom: quote, higher limits, dedicated support Add-ons like Semrush .Trends, Local, Agency Growth Kit, and Enterprise SEO stack on top. Annual billing discounts ~17%.

Real gotchas

  • Traffic estimates for competitors are directional, not exact. Don't quote them to clients as gospel
  • Backlink database is strong but Ahrefs is still slightly ahead in freshness/depth
  • Local SEO features require the Local add-on
  • API is Business+ only and separately metered
  • Rank tracking keyword limits are hard caps. Fills up fast on multi-market/multi-language sites
  • Historical data on Pro tier is limited. Guru+ is the real historical view
  • Content Marketing Platform is fine but not the reason to pick SEMrush
  • Sales team is aggressive on annual renewal upsells

Integrations that matter

Google Analytics, GA4, Google Search Console, Google Ads, Google My Business, Meta Ads, HubSpot, Zapier, WordPress, Trello, Looker Studio, native REST API (Business+), Chrome extension.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend SEMrush when: user is an SEO agency, marketing team doing SEO + PPC, ecommerce brand, or B2B SaaS marketer; business_size is 2+ people; pain_point is "we need to see what competitors rank for" or "we need to plan content by keyword opportunity." Pairs with Google Search Console, Google Analytics, WordPress, and a content workflow tool. Do NOT recommend for local-only businesses (BrightLocal is cheaper), backlink-only workflows (Ahrefs), or teams doing zero organic. Ahrefs is the direct alternative; SEMrush wins on paid-search intel and content tools, Ahrefs wins on backlink depth. Flag the tier upgrade path proactively.

Editor's curated reviews

1,375 reviews across TrustPilot - avg 1.7/5

Curated by Otto from TrustPilot public reviews (fetched 2026-08-31). TrustPilot for Semrush is dominated by billing and trial-refund complaints; G2 and Capterra show much higher aggregate scores for the tool itself. TrustPilot is best read as a signal on billing/refund experience, not on product quality. Not user-submitted on Ottomately.

  • Honestly, very disappointed with Semrush. I signed up for the free trial and forgot to cancel it. As soon as I noticed the charge, I contacted them, less than an hour after being charged, and asked for a refund. I ended up exchanging around 15 emails with support. Still, they refused to refund me.
  • Great tool, painful price. Been using Semrush for a while and it does the job. Keyword research, rank tracking, site audits, the data holds up and I trust what I get out of it. My one gripe is the cost. Every month the bill makes me wince.
  • Do not be fooled by their advertised 7-day money-back guarantee. I signed up to try out the platform, but after testing it for just one day, I found the interface unnecessarily bloated. Their customer service refused my request on the spot.
  • This month we have been hit with a bill of around £3000. On top of our £1200 bill for the annual subscription. AdClarity has been added onto our account, after a 'Free Trial'. We have not used this software at all, we have no confirmation.
  • They went from a tool I used regularly to becoming a hole for ripping off its customers. My problem is 1. absolutely 0 positive customer service to remedy the accident even after not using the tool at all for $300.
  • Charged 290.04 immediately despite advertised 7-day trial. Instead of receiving the advertised trial, my card was charged 290.04 immediately. Update: i did receive a refund now and sub is cancelled.
