Productivity - Setup Guide
How to set up Thinkific
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Easy. First course live in a weekend. Design customization takes another day if you care about brand fit. Integrating with an email tool and community layer is a few hours.
Read these before you start
- The Free tier is real but limited to one course. Fine for testing, not scaling
- Communities (Thinkific Communities) is a separate add-on/tier, not free on lower plans
- Email marketing tools inside Thinkific are basic. Keep a real ESP
- Coaching bookings are functional but not Calendly-quality
- Custom design has real flexibility but non-designers still hit a ceiling
- Migration to/from other platforms preserves content but not marketing automation
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Thinkific account
Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.
Open Thinkific signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Thinkific pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Thinkific into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Zapier, Make, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, ConvertKit/Kit, HubSpot, Infusionsoft/Keap, Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Segment, Shopify (via Zapier), Circle (community alternative), Calendly, Zoom (native live lessons), Stripe, PayPal.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Thinkific deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Thinkific - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend Thinkific when: user is a course creator, coach, consultant, or educator; pain_point is "I need a course platform without transaction fees on my Free/Basic tier" or "I want deeper design control than Teachable" or "I need built-in community and coaching in one platform"; and Kajabi feels like overkill. Pairs with Kit or ActiveCampaign for email, Zoom for live sessions, Stripe for payments. Do NOT recommend for enterprise L&D, cohort programs, or teams that need one platform for site + ...
Pricing you'll hit
- Free: 1 course, unlimited students, 0% transaction fee, basic features - Basic: ~$49/mo, unlimited courses, custom domain, coupons, email students - Start: ~$99/mo, communities, memberships, groups, live lessons - Grow: ~$199/mo, advanced customization, more admin, single sign-on options - Expand and Plus tiers: higher, more admins/courses, advanced permissions Zero transaction fees across all ...
