Customer Support - Setup Guide
How to set up tawk.to
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Trivial. Sign up, paste a JavaScript snippet on your site, start chatting. WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, and Ghost plugins available.
Read these before you start
- The "Powered by tawk.to" branding on the widget is small but visible, most brands eventually pay $29/mo to remove it (per domain, so multi-brand orgs pay multiple times)
- Data ownership: chat transcripts and end-user data are stored on tawk.to servers. Their business model is genuinely free-plus-add-ons, but read the DPA and privacy policy before using in regulated industries
- Hired Agents are trained on your knowledge base but they are tawk.to employees not yours, escalations and complex product questions still route to you
- AI Assist message allowances are hard caps, exceeding tier means either upgrade or the AI stops responding until the next cycle
- No native phone/voice support (video call is peer-to-peer via widget, not PSTN)
- Analytics are basic vs Intercom/Zendesk
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your tawk.to account
Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.
Open tawk.to signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If tawk.to pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire tawk.to into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Ghost, Weebly, Joomla plugins. Zapier, Make (via Zapier). Slack notifications. Google Analytics event tracking. Basic HubSpot integration. Native mobile SDKs (iOS, Android) for in-app chat.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how tawk.to deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in tawk.to - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend tawk.to when: user is any small business wanting a free chat widget, or cost-sensitive orgs testing whether chat drives conversions. Highest fit for local service (real estate, medspa, trades, restaurants) and small ecommerce. Recommend the $29/mo branding-removal add-on when the widget is on a customer-facing brand site. Consider the $1/hr Hired Agents for businesses that want chat coverage but cannot staff it internally. Do NOT recommend for B2B SaaS needing product-led onboarding (I...
