Shopify

E-commerce platform for building and managing online stores

What it does

Shopify is the default hosted ecommerce platform. You get a storefront, checkout (their own, one of the best-converting in the industry), product/inventory/order/customer management, hundreds of themes, a huge app marketplace (5,000+ apps for everything from reviews to subscriptions to warehouse routing), payments through Shop Pay + Shopify Payments, POS for retail, and Shopify Markets for international/multi-currency. It scales from a first-time seller to Shopify Plus at enterprise volume without a re-platform.

Integrates with

Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, eBay, Mailchimp, Klaviyo

Who this fits

  • New ecommerce founders launching their first store
  • Existing small ecom brands doing $50K-$5M/yr looking for the best all-around platform
  • Retail stores adding online + POS (Shopify POS integrates cleanly)
  • Medspa, salon, service businesses selling products or gift cards alongside services
  • Brands migrating from WooCommerce or Squarespace who want scale + reliability
  • DTC brands running paid acquisition (Shopify's checkout conversion is a real edge)

Who it does NOT fit

  • Businesses that are not selling products online (there are dozens of better tools for services, memberships, or content)
  • Marketplaces with many independent sellers (Shopify is single-brand; use Sharetribe or a custom build)
  • Very complex B2B commerce with quote-based pricing and complex approvals (BigCommerce B2B Edition or a custom platform is better)
  • Ultra-high-volume brands ($100M+/yr) who need deep custom infrastructure (still can use Shopify Plus, but evaluate headless custom builds)
  • Anyone whose "store" is really just a single-page checkout for one product (use a simple Stripe payment link)

Pricing

- Basic: ~$39/mo, 2 staff accounts, basic reports, standard shipping discounts - Shopify: ~$105/mo, 5 staff accounts, professional reports, better shipping discounts - Advanced: ~$399/mo, 15 staff accounts, custom reports, lowest transaction fees, advanced shipping - Plus: from ~$2,300/mo (or 0.25% of GMV), enterprise features, checkout customization, higher API limits, dedicated support - Payments: Shopify Payments takes ~2.9% + 30¢ on Basic (drops on higher tiers). Third-party payment gateways add a Shopify fee (~0.5-2%) on top - POS Pro: ~$89/mo per location (POS Lite is included on all plans) - Apps: budget $50-$500/mo on top for a real store Annual billing saves ~25%.

Real gotchas

  • Third-party payment gateway fees stack. Stay on Shopify Payments unless you have a real reason to switch
  • App creep is real. Every "just $19/mo" app adds up to a $500/mo bill fast — audit quarterly
  • Theme customization beyond drag-and-drop needs Liquid (Shopify's templating language) — hire a dev or use a design system
  • Checkout customization on Basic/Shopify/Advanced tiers is limited. Full customization needs Plus + Checkout Extensibility
  • Shopify's built-in email is fine for basics. Real email marketing needs Klaviyo (or ActiveCampaign, but Klaviyo wins for ecom)
  • International/multi-currency works but requires setup in Shopify Markets and app support
  • Data export is fine for products/customers/orders, painful for years of analytics — snapshot regularly

Integrations that matter

Klaviyo, Meta Ads, Google Ads, Google Shopping, TikTok Shop, Amazon (Multi-Channel), Etsy, ShipStation, ShipBob, Loop Returns, Yotpo, Judge.me, Recharge (subscriptions), Gorgias (support), QuickBooks Online, Xero, Zapier, Google Analytics 4.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Shopify when: user sells physical or digital products online, industry is ecommerce (or medspa/retail with a product line), and business_size is anything from solo to 50+. Almost always the correct first recommendation for a new online store. Pairs with Klaviyo (email/SMS), Meta Ads (acquisition), a review app (Yotpo, Judge.me), a subscription app if applicable (Recharge), a shipping tool (ShipStation), and QuickBooks/Xero. Do NOT recommend for pure services, marketplaces, B2B SaaS, real estate, or anyone whose primary need is a website (they need a real CMS). If the user is on Squarespace Commerce and hitting limits, Shopify is the standard upgrade. If the user is on WooCommerce and tired of maintenance, Shopify is the swap.
