Sentry
Error monitoring and performance tracking for apps
What it does
Sentry is an application monitoring platform focused on errors and performance for web, mobile, and backend applications. Captures exceptions in real time with the full stack trace, request/response context, breadcrumbs (what happened before the error), user session, environment, and release info. Also does performance monitoring (traces, spans, slow queries), session replay (video-like recording of what the user saw), profiling, uptime monitoring, and cron monitoring. Alerts route to Slack, PagerDuty, or email. It is how you find out an error is happening before your users email support.

Who this fits
- Any team shipping a web, mobile, or backend application
- Startups and B2B SaaS teams where reliability affects revenue
- Ecommerce brands where checkout errors mean lost orders
- Agencies delivering apps that need monitoring for the client handoff
- Solo developers who want a safety net for production
- Teams that keep discovering bugs from support tickets instead of monitoring
Who it does NOT fit
- Non-technical businesses (no application to monitor)
- Marketing-only sites with no dynamic code (a static site does not need Sentry)
- Teams already deeply committed to a competing stack (Datadog APM, New Relic, Rollbar, Bugsnag) that works
- Ultra-small side projects that will never have real traffic (Sentry Free tier is fine, but even that is overhead)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Errors bill per event. A cascading bug can flood your quota — configure spike protection immediately
- Source maps for JavaScript must be uploaded per release or your stack traces are useless
- Replay is powerful but captures more data — check privacy settings and mask PII before enabling on production
- Performance monitoring uses sampling — 100% sample rate on high-traffic apps burns quota. Sample deliberately
- Alert rules default to noisy — tune within the first week or teams learn to ignore Sentry emails
- Session replay + PII: default settings mask most inputs but always verify. Health/finance/legal apps need extra care
- Free tier has a hard 5K error cap — a real production app will need Team within weeks

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Sentry when: user ships code and cares whether production actually works. Best fit for B2B SaaS, ecommerce, agencies with dev teams, and any startup. Pairs with GitHub (release tracking), Slack (alerts), Vercel/Netlify (deploys), and whatever framework the team uses. Do NOT recommend for non-technical businesses or for static-only marketing sites. If the user is on LogRocket and asking about Sentry — different tools, but Sentry's error focus is stronger while LogRocket's replay focus is stronger. If they need both, Sentry now has replay so it can be the single tool. Warn about the usage-based bill and spike protection setup on day one.
