How to set up Pipedream

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Easy to sign up and fire a webhook to Slack in 10 minutes. Medium to build anything that touches auth tokens, retries, and error handling. Hard if you are not comfortable reading a stack trace, becaus

Read these before you start

  • The billing unit is credits, not runs. A workflow that reads a 5MB file or waits on a slow API burns more credits than the run count suggests. Pipedream's own docs explain the multiplier, and it is the number one billing surprise on Reddit and their community forum
  • Long-running workflows (over ~30 seconds) get billed at a higher credit rate on the paid tiers
  • No native visual canvas; if the team includes non-coders they will bounce to Make
  • Free-tier workflows are public by default; private workflows require a paid plan
  • Version history and workflow diff exist but are shallow compared to git-backed tools
  • The "$0 forever" free tier changed twice in the last two years; do not assume today's limits hold

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Pipedream account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Pipedream signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Pipedream pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Pipedream into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: GitHub, Slack, Google Sheets, Google Drive, OpenAI, Anthropic, Stripe, HubSpot, Salesforce, Airtable, Notion, Discord, Twilio, SendGrid, Shopify, Webflow, Supabase, AWS, Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, custom HTTP.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Pipedream deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Pipedream - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Recommend Pipedream when: the user is technical or has a developer on staff, the workflow needs real code (transforms, custom auth, complex branching), and business_size is 1-50. Pairs with GitHub, Slack, Stripe, OpenAI, and any custom internal API. Do NOT recommend for non-technical operators (send them to Zapier or Make), for vertical use cases where a shaped tool exists (Jobber, ServiceTitan, GoHighLevel), or for teams that need a visual canvas (Make or n8n). Warn about the credits billing mo...

Pricing you'll hit

- Free: ~10,000 credits/month, 3 workflows, community support - Basic: ~$19/mo, 20,000 credits, 10 workflows, unlimited event sources - Advanced: ~$49/mo, ~50,000 credits, unlimited workflows, longer execution time - Business / Enterprise: custom, SSO, SOC 2 reports, private workspace, VPC deploy - Pipedream moved from an "invocations" model to a "credits" model. One credit is not one workflow run...
