Mixpanel
Product analytics: track user events, build funnels, run cohort analysis
What it does
Mixpanel is a product analytics tool. Where Google Analytics tracks marketing (traffic, sources, sessions), Mixpanel tracks what users do inside a product after they sign up. Every action a user takes fires an event with properties, and you build funnels, cohorts, retention curves, and flows on top of that event stream. Answers questions like "what percent of signups activate the key feature within 7 days" and "which cohort retains best."

Key features
Integrates with
Segment, Amplitude, Slack, Salesforce, HubSpot
Who this fits
- B2B and B2C SaaS product teams tracking activation, engagement, retention
- Mobile app teams (Mixpanel's SDKs are strong)
- E-commerce with a custom-built checkout flow needing funnel drop-off analysis
- Growth teams running A/B tests and needing per-user event tracking
- Any product where the feature-usage question outweighs the traffic-source question
Who it does NOT fit
- Marketing-first teams whose main question is "which channel converts" (GA4 wins that)
- Solo founders pre-product-market-fit (Mixpanel's power is wasted before you have signups)
- Simple websites or content businesses (aggregate analytics is enough; Plausible or Fathom fit)
- Teams with under 10K monthly active users and no event-tracking discipline (Mixpanel amplifies bad tracking into confusing dashboards)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Historical event data cannot be re-attributed if you change event names later. Rename a critical event, lose the historical funnel [source: mixpanel.com/blog/event-naming].
- Mixpanel bills on MTUs (monthly tracked users) since April 2024. If you accidentally identify every visitor including bots, your bill spikes without warning. Filter carefully at the SDK layer.
- Free tier is generous but caps at 1M events/month and drops advanced features (group analytics, warehouse export). Going over is a hard cutoff, not overage billing.
- Insights, funnels, and retention reports look easy but each has statistical gotchas (funnel step ordering, conversion window, first vs any occurrence) that change results dramatically.
- Session Replay is a separate add-on line item; not included in Growth by default.
Integrations that matter
Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Mixpanel when the client has a real product (SaaS, mobile app, custom checkout flow) and is asking activation, engagement, retention, or cohort questions. Do NOT recommend for local-service, real-estate, trades, medspa businesses whose main need is website analytics; those get GA4 or Plausible. Mixpanel vs Amplitude is a preference call at small scale (Mixpanel simpler UI; Amplitude deeper governance and free MTU allowance at 50K). At enterprise, Amplitude usually wins.
