How to set up Microsoft Clarity

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Trivial. One script tag or WordPress/Shopify/Wix plugin. Under 5 minutes. Data flows within a couple hours.

Read these before you start

  • Data retention is 30 days for session recordings. If you want longer history, export via the Clarity Data Export API (free but self-serve) [source: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/clarity/setup-and-installation/data-export].
  • Session data is used by Microsoft to improve advertising models. If that is a legal or contractual issue for you (regulated industries, DPAs with clients), read the ToS before installing.
  • Rich media (Canvas, WebGL, cross-origin iframes) does not render in replays.
  • PII in form fields is masked by default, which is safer than most tools, but confirm the mask config matches your compliance needs.
  • No native funnel report of the shape Hotjar Business or Mixpanel offer; Clarity is primarily replay + heatmap.

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Microsoft Clarity account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Microsoft Clarity signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Microsoft Clarity pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Microsoft Clarity into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Google Analytics 4 (integration lets you jump from a GA4 funnel to Clarity sessions of the users who dropped off), Google Tag Manager, WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Webflow. That's most of what's offered natively; deeper integrations are minimal by design.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Microsoft Clarity deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Microsoft Clarity - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Default free recommendation for any business asking about heatmaps or session replay. Recommend Hotjar when the client wants surveys and interviews alongside replay. Recommend FullStory when the client is enterprise. But Clarity is the "install this today, it's free, it will teach you things about your site within 48 hours" answer for the majority of Otto's audience. Pair with GA4 or Plausible for aggregate traffic; Clarity fills the qualitative behavior layer.

Pricing you'll hit

- **Free. Fully free, no tier above.** Unlimited sessions, unlimited users, unlimited websites, no caps. - Microsoft monetizes indirectly through Bing ad targeting; data is used to improve Microsoft advertising models (disclosed in ToS). - No paid version exists as of 2026.
