Marketing & Funnels - Setup Guide

How to set up Meta Ads Manager

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Read these before you start

  • iOS 14.5 App Tracking Transparency (2021) broke pixel-based attribution for iOS Safari and app users. The Conversions API (server-side event tracking) is the workaround, and it must be configured separately alongside the Pixel or attribution silently degrades [source: developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/conversions-api].
  • Ad account bans happen. Meta's automated review disables accounts for policy violations that were never clear, and appeals take days to weeks. Every serious advertiser keeps a backup Business Manager and asset separation.
  • Custom audience minimums: retargeting audiences need at least 100 matched users to activate; lookalike audiences need 100-500 source users.
  • Special ad categories (housing, employment, credit) restrict targeting options by U.S. law (2019 settlement). Real estate agents cannot target by age, gender, or ZIP code the way other advertisers can.
  • Advantage+ campaigns (AI-optimized) hide the targeting from you. Sometimes they crush; sometimes they burn budget on the wrong audience. Test against manual targeting before trusting them.

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

Create your Meta Ads Manager account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Meta Ads Manager signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Meta Ads Manager pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Meta Ads Manager into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Shopify (native app), WooCommerce, BigCommerce, WordPress, Zapier, HubSpot, Salesforce (via Conversions API), Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Google Tag Manager, Segment, and every major CDP. Lead ads pipe to CRMs via native integrations or Zapier.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Meta Ads Manager deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Meta Ads Manager - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Default paid social recommendation for any B2C, e-commerce, local service, real estate, or medspa client. Pair with Google Ads for search intent. Recommend TikTok Ads alongside for Gen Z / younger audiences. Recommend LinkedIn Ads instead for narrow B2B decision-makers. Do not recommend for restricted categories (crypto, adult, some financial) or businesses whose ICP is not on Meta apps.

Pricing you'll hit

- **Free platform.** Cost is ad spend, priced auction-style (CPC, CPM, CPA depending on optimization). - Minimum daily budget varies: as low as $1/day for engagement, $5/day for conversions in most markets. - Typical CPCs: $0.50-$3 for engagement, $1-$8 for conversions, $10-$50 for lead ads depending on vertical. - Real estate, medspa, insurance, mortgage typically see higher CPCs due to competiti...
