Mailchimp

Email marketing and automation platform for growing businesses

What it does

Mailchimp is email marketing and automation software, the tool most small businesses' first-ever email newsletter went out through. Campaigns, basic automation (welcome series, abandoned cart), landing pages, and a lightweight built-in CRM layer for audience management. It's been around long enough to be the default answer to "what should I use for email" for a huge share of small businesses, even as more automation-focused competitors (Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign) have pulled ahead on depth for specific use cases like e-commerce.

Integrates with

Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress, Salesforce, Zapier

Who this fits

  • Small businesses and creators sending a regular newsletter or basic promotional campaigns
  • E-commerce stores wanting native Shopify/WooCommerce integration with reasonably good out-of-box automation
  • Nonprofits and small teams needing a simple, well-known tool with a real free tier to start on
  • Agencies managing email for multiple small-business clients (the "managed" affiliate tier reflects this use case)

Who it does NOT fit

  • E-commerce brands wanting deep automation and segmentation on purchase behavior — Klaviyo is purpose-built for this and generally wins the comparison
  • B2B teams needing tight CRM + email + sales pipeline integration — HubSpot or ActiveCampaign fit better
  • Anyone with a large list containing many old unsubscribed or inactive contacts — see the pricing gotcha below, this gets expensive fast
  • Teams wanting fully transparent, predictable overage pricing — Mailchimp's overage rates for exceeding a plan's send/contact limits aren't clearly published up front

Pricing

- Free: 500 contacts, 1,000 sends/month - Essentials: $13/mo — 500 contacts, 5,000 sends/month - Standard: $20/mo — 500 contacts, 6,000 sends/month, automations unlocked - Premium: $350/mo — 10,000+ contacts, advanced segmentation and reporting - Pricing scales with contact count on every paid tier — the listed entry price is for the smallest contact bracket only, and the real monthly cost climbs as the list grows, independent of the feature tier chosen (Source: Retainful Mailchimp pricing 2026 breakdown, https://www.retainful.com/blog/mailchimp-pricing)

Real gotchas

  • Mailchimp counts subscribed, unsubscribed, AND non-subscribed contacts toward your paid contact limit unless you manually archive them — a list built up over years can have 20-40% dead weight quietly inflating the bill every month (Source: Retainful Mailchimp pricing breakdown, https://www.retainful.com/blog/mailchimp-pricing)
  • A single contact who exists in two different audiences/lists counts TWICE toward the total contact count — a very common and expensive surprise for businesses running separate lists for different segments instead of using tags within one audience
  • Overage rates for exceeding your plan's contact or send limit are not clearly published on Mailchimp's pricing page, making it hard to predict the exact cost of growth in advance — budget conservatively and check the account dashboard regularly
  • Reddit and G2 reviews consistently mention price hikes and shrinking free-tier features as long-time users' top complaint, with a documented pattern of users switching to Klaviyo or Brevo after a price increase
  • Hidden costs stack from transactional email, SMS add-ons, and custom domain purchases, which can push the real bill 20-40% above the sticker price for an active user

Integrations that matter

Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress, Salesforce, Zapier, Meta/Instagram (basic ad sync), Google Analytics.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Mailchimp when: the user is a small business or creator sending a straightforward newsletter or basic campaign, wants a well-known name with a real free tier, or runs a small e-commerce store not yet needing Klaviyo-level automation depth. Do NOT recommend for e-commerce brands serious about revenue-driving flows — Klaviyo wins that comparison directly. Always flag the contact-counting gotcha (unsubscribed contacts still bill, duplicate contacts across lists double-count) before estimating a client's real monthly cost — this is the single most common source of Mailchimp bill shock. Pairs with Shopify for e-commerce or a landing page tool for lead capture.

Editor's curated reviews

1,501 reviews across TrustPilot - avg 2.6/5

Curated by Otto from TrustPilot public reviews (fetched 2026-08-31). Mailchimp TrustPilot (1,501 reviews) is heavily bimodal (20% 5-star, 66% 1-star) with critical reviews clustering on billing surprises, deliverability delays, and support after the Intuit acquisition. G2 and Capterra were consulted for aggregate context and both trend meaningfully higher; the TrustPilot layer is where cancellation and billing pain surfaces. Not user-submitted on Ottomately.
