Klaviyo
Email and SMS marketing platform built for e-commerce
What it does
Klaviyo is email and SMS marketing built specifically for e-commerce, deeply integrated with Shopify (and BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento) so every flow — abandoned cart, post-purchase, browse abandonment, win-back — is triggered by actual purchase and browsing behavior, not just a tag or a click. Revenue attribution is native: every campaign and flow shows exactly how much revenue it generated, which is why it's the default recommendation for any DTC brand serious about email as a revenue channel rather than just a newsletter.

Key features
Integrates with
Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento, Zapier
Who this fits
- Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or Magento stores that want behavior-triggered email and SMS flows
- DTC and e-commerce brands treating email/SMS as a real revenue channel, not just announcements
- Brands with enough purchase/browse data to make segmentation and flows meaningfully different from a generic newsletter
- Teams that want to see exact revenue attribution per campaign and per flow
Who it does NOT fit
- Non-e-commerce businesses (service businesses, B2B, consultants) — Klaviyo's entire value proposition is behavioral e-commerce data; a service business gets none of that benefit and pays e-commerce-tier prices for basic email
- Very small or pre-revenue stores — the pricing scales with contact count fast and the automation depth isn't worth paying for until there's real purchase volume to trigger flows off of
- Teams that want simple, predictable flat-rate pricing — Klaviyo's tiered subscriber pricing plus separate SMS credits makes total cost harder to predict than a flat-rate tool
- Businesses that need SMS as the primary channel — Klaviyo's SMS credit pricing is less competitive per-credit than SMS-first tools
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Pricing and customer support are Klaviyo's two most-cited complaints across a 300-review analysis spanning G2, Trustpilot, and Capterra — "brutal" pricing at scale and "unexpected price hikes" are direct quotes from reviewers (Source: Omnisend Klaviyo pricing 2026, https://www.omnisend.com/blog/klaviyo-pricing/)
- SMS credits expire monthly with no rollover, and the per-credit rate is less competitive than SMS-focused competitors like Omnisend — a store planning to lean into SMS should model the real cost before committing, not just assume "add SMS for $15 more"
- The base email subscription tells only part of the total cost story — add-ons, AI feature usage, and the SMS credit system together mean the sticker price under-quotes what an active e-commerce brand actually pays month to month
- Contact-count pricing steps up in brackets, so list growth from a successful campaign or a viral moment can bump the account into a materially higher tier overnight
- Support quality complaints appear consistently enough across independent review platforms that it's worth setting expectations with a client up front, especially at lower-tier pricing

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Klaviyo when: the business is an e-commerce store (Shopify especially) with real purchase/browse data and wants behavior-triggered flows with revenue attribution, not a generic newsletter. Do NOT recommend for non-e-commerce businesses — the price is not justified without behavioral commerce data to trigger flows off of. Do NOT recommend to a pre-revenue store; suggest Mailchimp or a free tier until there's real purchase volume. Always flag the SMS credit expiration and contact-count step pricing before quoting a total monthly cost — both are common sources of bill surprise. Pairs natively with Shopify and works alongside a loyalty/reviews app for full lifecycle marketing.
