Intercom
Chat-first customer messaging platform
What it does
Intercom is a customer messaging and support platform. In-app chat widget, shared team inbox for email + chat + social, help center / knowledge base, product tours, outbound campaigns, and Fin (their AI agent that resolves customer conversations autonomously). The historical positioning was "chat for SaaS," and it still owns that segment better than anyone. Fin AI is priced per-resolution ($0.99 each) on top of seat pricing, which is a genuinely different pricing model than most competitors and dramatically changes total cost depending on volume.

Key features
Integrates with
Slack, Salesforce, HubSpot, Stripe, Zapier
Who this fits
- B2B SaaS companies with in-app users needing live chat + product tours
- Product-led-growth teams using messaging to activate and expand accounts
- Ecommerce brands with high chat volume where Fin's automation can deflect real cost
- Teams that already have polished knowledge-base content Fin can draw from
- Support orgs sized 10-500 agents wanting a modern unified inbox
Who it does NOT fit
- Solo founders and small teams (Crisp, tawk.to, Chatwoot are dramatically cheaper)
- Non-technical service businesses (real estate, home services) with lower volume, overkill
- Teams needing phone/voice as the primary support channel (Zendesk, Freshdesk, Aircall bundles are stronger)
- Cost-sensitive orgs, Intercom is priced at the top of the market and Fin per-resolution charges compound fast
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Fin's $0.99-per-resolution can spiral. A resolution counts if Fin successfully answered without human handoff, and Intercom's definition of "successful" has been contested. Track resolution logs monthly to validate ([Featurebase Fin pricing](https://www.featurebase.app/blog/fin-ai-pricing))
- Contact-based pricing tiers that Intercom used historically caused nasty bills as user bases grew, the seat-based model is cleaner but Fin resolution charges reintroduce volume risk
- WhatsApp, SMS, and outbound proactive messages carry additional per-message fees, easy to miss during procurement
- "Lite seats" (Advanced: 20, Expert: 50) are read-only or limited-permission seats, not full agents
- Migrating off Intercom is painful, macros, workflows, and help-center content require rebuild
- No true free tier, "Startup Program" credits exist but expire
- Overage charges apply if you exceed contact or conversation caps

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Intercom when: business_size is 10+ users AND industry is B2B SaaS or high-volume ecommerce AND pain_points include in-app chat, product-led onboarding, or AI-driven deflection. Highest fit for B2B SaaS. Do NOT recommend for solo founders, small non-SaaS teams, service businesses, or cost-sensitive orgs (send to Crisp, Chatwoot, or tawk.to instead). If the user is comparing Intercom to Zendesk, Intercom wins on in-app messenger and PLG use cases, Zendesk wins on omnichannel breadth (phone included) and lower TCO for support-ticket-first orgs. Always flag Fin's per-resolution pricing math before recommending it, at high volume it can dwarf the seat cost.
