Where Zapier and Make target business workflows, IFTTT owns smart home + consumer app + IoT automation with a huge catalog of consumer services (Alexa, Google Home, Philips Hue, Ring, Nest, Sonos, LIFX, TP-Link, WeMo, Tesla). Best for personal automation and light small-business use where the workflow is straightforward and involves consumer/IoT apps.

Real gotchas

- Applets are single-trigger, single-action by design. Multi-action is Pro+ only. If the workflow needs "when trigger, do A, then filter, then do B," IFTTT is the wrong tool
- Trigger polling on Free is intentionally slow (checks can lag 15-60 min). Pro+ has faster polling but real-time is still not guaranteed
- Multiple accounts per service (e.g. two Instagram accounts, two Google accounts) is Pro+ only
- No branching logic, no filters mid-workflow, no error handling / retry policy — it is single-flow by design
- Team/multi-user workspace is not a feature. IFTTT is single-account only
- Consumer-focused connector catalog: rich in smart home / social, sparse in business apps compared to Zapier/Make
- IFTTT changed its pricing model in 2020 (introduced Pro), broke many "free forever" expectations; be careful when quoting historical assumptions

Recommend IFTTT when: solo user or small-business user with SIMPLE, single-trigger-single-action needs, especially around smart home / IoT / consumer apps / social cross-posting. Highest fit for personal productivity, trades using IoT sensors, and content creators. Do NOT recommend for real business workflows, multi-step automation, B2B SaaS integration, or team use. If comparing to Zapier: Zapier wins for everything business (multi-step, filters, formatters, huge B2B catalog); IFTTT wins on price and consumer/IoT breadth. If comparing to Home Assistant: Home Assistant wins for serious smart-home builds; IFTTT wins for zero-config cross-service triggers. Sell it as a consumer/IoT tool, not a business automation stack.
