Hootsuite
Enterprise social media management
What it does
Hootsuite is a social media management platform for teams. Schedule posts across major networks, monitor mentions and keywords in stream columns, manage an inbox of comments and DMs, run basic social listening and analytics, and coordinate approvals across team members. One of the original social management tools (founded 2008), now positioned mid-market to enterprise after aggressive pricing changes that pushed small-business users to Buffer and Later.

Key features
Integrates with
Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X/Twitter, Facebook, YouTube
Who this fits
- Marketing teams at mid-market and enterprise brands managing 10+ social accounts
- Agencies managing many client accounts under one dashboard
- Teams needing multi-user approval workflows before posts go live
- Businesses running social customer service and needing inbox routing
- Organizations already standardized on Hootsuite years ago
Who it does NOT fit
- Solo founders and micro-businesses (over-priced; Buffer's free or Essentials fits better)
- Instagram-first visual brands (Later is stronger)
- Teams needing best-in-class analytics (Sprout Social is deeper)
- Anyone starting fresh in 2026 with fewer than 5 social accounts
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Hootsuite's own community complained loudly about the 2022-2023 price hikes and feature reshuffles; the Professional tier lost multi-user support and free tier was eliminated, pushing users to Buffer [source: hootsuite.com/blog/announcements and community.hootsuite.com threads].
- Instagram scheduling requires a Business or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page (Meta API limitation).
- Some platform integrations lag (TikTok scheduling was late; certain Instagram features require going through Meta Business Suite).
- Analytics and listening features that competitors bundle are often add-ons on Hootsuite pricing.
- Migrating away from Hootsuite is painful; scheduled queues and analytics do not export cleanly.

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Hootsuite only when the client is already a Hootsuite customer or is a mid-market to enterprise team managing 20+ social accounts with approval workflows. Otherwise, recommend Buffer (small teams), Later (Instagram-first), or Sprout Social (analytics and CRM-grade inbox). Do not recommend Hootsuite to solo founders in 2026; the price does not fit the value at that tier.
