Productivity - Setup Guide
How to set up Hemingway Editor
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Zero. Open the website, paste text. Desktop app installs in a minute.
Read these before you start
- The web free version is genuinely usable forever, most solo writers never need to pay
- Editor Plus credits (for AI rewrites) reset monthly and do not roll over, heavy rewrite users on the monthly plan can burn through them in a week
- The grade-level score treats American 6th-grade reading as the "target," this is a strong opinion, not a universal truth
- Hemingway penalizes passive voice categorically, which is wrong for some contexts (scientific writing, incident reports, blame-neutral communication)
- No live collaboration or team features, if two people need to edit the same document, use Google Docs and paste back
- No native SaaS integrations, this is a paste-in-paste-out tool
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Hemingway Editor account
Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.
Open Hemingway Editor signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Hemingway Editor pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Hemingway Editor into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: None. Hemingway is deliberately a stand-alone editor. Direct export to Markdown, HTML, and Word from the paid desktop app. No API. No Zapier. No Chrome extension for in-place editing on other sites.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Hemingway Editor deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Hemingway Editor - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend Hemingway when: user is writing customer-facing prose (blog posts, sales pages, cold emails, newsletters) and wants a readability-forcing function. Recommend the free web tier first, upgrade to $19.99 desktop only if they want offline use or write daily. Editor Plus AI is optional and easy to skip. Do NOT recommend for teams (no collaboration), technical/scientific writers, or fiction. If the user is comparing Hemingway to Grammarly, they solve different problems, Grammarly catches gra...
Pricing you'll hit
- Web version: free, browser-based, no login needed - Desktop app (Mac/Windows): $19.99 one-time, permanent ownership, no subscription - Editor Plus: $10/mo monthly or $100/yr annual (effective $8.33/mo), adds AI sentence rewrites with a credit allowance Verified against [Hemingway Editor billing FAQ](https://hemingwayapp.com/help/support-articles/billing-faqs). The desktop app remains a one-time...
