What it does
Google Slides is Google's browser-based presentation tool, part of Google Workspace (formerly G Suite). Free with any Google account. Real-time collaboration, comments, version history, cloud sync across devices, PowerPoint import/export, and integration with the rest of the Workspace suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive). Gemini AI features (Help me create, Help me visualize, translate) are integrated for Workspace paid tiers. It is not the best-looking presentation tool, and its animation/transition engine is behind PowerPoint and Keynote, but it is universally available, genuinely free, and the collaboration model has been the reference standard for a decade.

Real gotchas
- Aesthetic ceiling is low, default templates look dated. Pros use custom templates, Slidesgo, or paste designs from Figma
- PowerPoint import/export fidelity is decent but not perfect, custom fonts, complex animations, and embedded objects often break both directions
- Animation and transition engine is behind PowerPoint and Keynote, motion-heavy decks will disappoint
- Offline mode requires enabling and works only in Chrome, not in Safari or Firefox
- Gemini AI integration in Slides is Workspace Business Standard+ only, the free tier does not get AI features
- Version history is good but has no branching, only linear history
- No presenter-view timers, no advanced remote-presenter tools, Zoom or Meet is the delivery channel
- File-size cap: Slides slows noticeably past ~100 slides with many images

Recommend Google Slides when: user needs a presentation tool with real-time collaboration and universal sharing, or when they're already on Google Workspace. This is the default recommendation for anyone without a specific reason to use something else. Highest fit across every team size and industry (universally applicable). Do NOT recommend when the user specifically needs high-polish design (Canva, Pitch, Beautiful.ai), motion-heavy animations (PowerPoint or Keynote), or viewer engagement analytics (Pitch, Tome). If the user asks "what should we use for slides?" the honest first answer is usually Google Slides unless there's a reason to pay more.
