Marketing & Funnels - Setup Guide
How to set up GoHighLevel
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Hard. Budget 2-4 hours minimum just to get a funnel, a pipeline, and one automation live, and 2-4 weeks to get a client account fully dialed in (calendars, automations, A2P 10DLC SMS registration, cus
Read these before you start
- Usage fees for SMS, email, voice minutes, and AI are billed on top of the subscription and are the #1 source of "surprise bill" complaints — GHL removed a 5% markup on phone-system charges in 2026 after user pushback, but usage itself is still metered separately from the plan price (Source: GHL product changelog, https://ideas.gohighlevel.com/changelog/no-more-extra-charges-weve-removed-the-5-markup-from-phone-system-charges)
- A2P 10DLC brand + campaign registration is mandatory before US SMS sends reliably. Skipping it or registering with a mismatched business name gets messages filtered or the campaign denied — plan a week for carrier approval, not a day
- Individual modules (email builder, funnel builder, website builder) are noticeably less polished than the dedicated best-in-class tool they replace. Users coming from Mailchimp or ClickFunnels notice the downgrade in that one feature even while gaining consolidation overall
- Support quality is inconsistent — ticket response and chat quality vary by tier and time of day, a recurring theme across independent reviews
- Email deliverability tanks after migrating an existing list if you skip domain warm-up; GHL sends from your connected domain so a cold-started domain gets flagged as spam fast
- The Starter plan caps you at 1 sub-account — most agencies need Unlimited ($297/mo) the moment they have a second client, which is a real jump from the $97 entry price
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your GoHighLevel account
Sign up at the link below. Card required for the paid tier - most plans include a trial period; check the pricing section on this page first so you know what you're committing to.
Open GoHighLevel signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If GoHighLevel pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire GoHighLevel into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Stripe, Twilio, Mailgun, Zapier, Make, Facebook/Meta Ads, Google Ads, Google My Business, QuickBooks (via Zapier), WordPress (via embed/iframe), Shopify (limited).. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how GoHighLevel deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in GoHighLevel - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend GoHighLevel when: the user runs an agency serving local businesses, or is a local service business (trades, real estate, med spa, dental, coaching) that needs lead capture + automated follow-up + booking + reputation management in one system, and business_size is solo to 50. This is the default recommendation for anyone building or running an Endgame-style local-lead-gen system. Do NOT recommend for e-commerce (Klaviyo + Shopify wins), B2B SaaS (HubSpot wins), or anyone who wants a sin...
Pricing you'll hit
- Starter: $97/mo — full CRM, funnels, email, SMS, 1 sub-account (your own business or one client) - Unlimited: $297/mo — unlimited sub-accounts, API access, no white-label branding included - SaaS Pro: $497/mo — white-label branding, SaaS Mode (resell GHL under your own brand with your own pricing tiers), rebilling - Usage costs are billed SEPARATE from the subscription: email sending, SMS/MMS, v...
