Fivetran
Automated data integration and ETL platform
What it does
Fivetran is a managed data pipeline (ELT) service. Point it at a source (Salesforce, Stripe, Shopify, Postgres, HubSpot, 500+ connectors), point it at a destination (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks), and it handles the schema, incremental syncs, historical backfills, schema drift, and retries. No pipeline code, no cron. It is the fastest way to get a warehouse populated with clean, typed, up-to-date source data. Reputation is deserved: connectors are maintained, docs are excellent, and it Just Works. Reputation for pricing is also deserved: it is the most expensive ELT tool by a wide margin.

Key features
Integrates with
Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift
Who this fits
- Mid-market and enterprise data teams standardizing many source systems into one warehouse
- Companies where analyst/engineer time is the constraint, not the tool bill
- SaaS companies with 20+ sources that need a hands-off, always-current warehouse
- Data teams with predictable, contained source volume (customer records, orders, ad spend)
- Enterprises with SOC 2 / HIPAA / regional data residency requirements
Who it does NOT fit
- Solo, small teams, or anyone with 1-3 sources (Airbyte OSS, Estuary, or a Python script wins on cost)
- Teams with high-volume, high-change data (product event streams, clickstream) — MAR pricing gets brutal
- Teams that want fine-grained control of the transformation layer (Fivetran only ELTs; use dbt after)
- Anyone allergic to consumption pricing surprises
Pricing
Real gotchas
- MAR is per-connector now, so 10 small connectors carry 10 minimum charges. Consolidate where possible
- History mode (SCD Type 2) counts every changed version as MAR. A row that updates daily = 30 MAR/mo per record. This alone has torched many Fivetran bills
- Product event tables and clickstream data are the fastest way to blow the bill up. Fivetran is not the right tool for event-scale volume — Snowplow or a native ingest is cheaper
- The 2026 change means historical bills are not predictive of new bills. Re-estimate any renewal
- "Free tier" of 500K MAR sounds generous but disappears the moment one connector goes wide
- Custom connectors (via Fivetran Functions or partner-built SDK) are supported but limited vs Airbyte OSS
- Business Critical is required for HIPAA workloads and adds a substantial multiplier

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Fivetran when: business_size is 100+ OR data team explicitly values "hands-off / no pipeline maintenance," AND the source count is 5+, AND there is a real warehouse already (Snowflake/BQ/Databricks/Redshift). Highest fit for mid-market B2B SaaS and enterprise data teams. Do NOT recommend for solo, small teams, high-volume event data, or cost-sensitive shops. If comparing to Airbyte: Airbyte OSS wins hard on cost and control; Fivetran wins on reliability, connector coverage, and zero-maintenance. Warn about the January 2026 pricing change (per-connector MAR + $5 minimums + deletes counted) in every recommendation — pre-2026 comparison numbers are stale.
