Productivity - Setup Guide
How to set up Fathom Analytics
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Trivial. Add one script tag to the site head, add the domain in Fathom, done. Under 5 minutes. WordPress, Ghost, Squarespace, Webflow, Wix all documented. No cookie consent banner required in most jur
Read these before you start
- Fathom is aggregate-only by design. There is no way to see an individual visitor's session or path, ever. This is a feature for privacy but a wall if a client asks "what did that specific lead do on the site" [source: usefathom.com/features].
- Pricing scales linearly on pageviews, unlike Plausible's tiered pricing. A viral post can spike a bill mid-month.
- Fathom does not have funnels in the way Plausible Business does. It tracks goals (events) but does not visualize the full drop-off flow.
- Uses first-party subdomain (cname.usefathom.com) or your own custom-domain proxy to dodge ad blockers, and the setup is documented but requires DNS access.
- Does not integrate natively with Google Ads or Meta Ads. If ad attribution matters, this is not the tool.
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Fathom Analytics account
Sign up at the link below. Card required for the paid tier - most plans include a trial period; check the pricing section on this page first so you know what you're committing to.
Open Fathom Analytics signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Fathom Analytics pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Fathom Analytics into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: WordPress plugin, Ghost, Zapier, Slack (goal notifications), API access on all plans. Uptime monitoring and email reports built in (no extra tool needed for basic status). No native ad-platform connectors.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Fathom Analytics deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Fathom Analytics - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Nearly identical positioning to Plausible. Recommend for solo founders, privacy-first clients, agencies wanting a low-training dashboard. Fathom vs Plausible comes down to preference: Fathom has flat pricing on pageviews with all features included, Plausible tiers Growth vs Business features. Fathom's UI is slightly more polished; Plausible is open source. Both beat GA4 for simplicity. Skip both when client runs heavy Google Ads and needs the GA4-Ads bridge.
Pricing you'll hit
- **No free tier.** 30-day free trial, no card. - **Pricing scales purely on pageviews:** - 100K pageviews/month: ~$15/mo - 200K pageviews/month: ~$24/mo - 500K pageviews/month: ~$44/mo - 1M pageviews/month: ~$74/mo - Custom above 2M. - Unlimited sites, unlimited team members, unlimited email reports on every tier. Only pageviews meter. - Discount for annual billing.
