Discord

Community chat platform with voice, video, and text

What it does

Discord is a real-time chat, voice, and video platform originally built for gamers, now the default community-hosting tool for creators, crypto/Web3 projects, developer communities, course cohorts, and DTC brand super-fans. Server-and-channel structure (like Slack), always-on voice channels (unlike Slack), lightweight video, threads, roles-based permissions, and a deep bot ecosystem. The core product is free; monetization is Nitro (personal cosmetics + upload limits) and Server Boosts (server-quality tier upgrades). Not a business collaboration tool - a community tool.

Integrates with

Zapier, GitHub, YouTube, Spotify

Who this fits

  • Creator/course/cohort communities (Web3, indie hackers, developers, artists, streamers)
  • DTC brands building a community loop with power customers
  • B2B SaaS developer-relations teams (Discord servers for API users, plugin developers)
  • Gaming, crypto, and NFT projects (native audience)
  • Open-source project communities

Who it does NOT fit

  • Any real business collaboration use case (Slack + Teams win; Discord lacks compliance)
  • Regulated industries needing SOC2, HIPAA, retention policies, audit logs
  • Enterprise organizations with IT governance (Discord has no admin console)
  • Customer support at scale (there is no ticketing, SLA, or CRM integration natively)
  • Anyone treating Discord as a work chat replacement (the DMs and notification model do not fit work)

Pricing

Discord itself: - Free: unlimited use, no seat costs, servers up to millions of members - Nitro Basic: $2.99 per user per month (individual cosmetics + limited perks) - Nitro: $9.99 per user per month (larger uploads, HD streaming, 2 free server boosts, 30% off additional boosts at $3.49 each) Server Boosts (upgrade a specific server's quality): - $4.99 per boost per month standard - Level 2 unlock: ~$34.93 for regular users, $24.45 for Nitro - Level 3 unlock: ~$69.86 for regular users, $48.90 for Nitro - Realistic community server budget: $10 to $30 per month for a few boosts at Level 2

Real gotchas

  • Non-obvious gotcha: Discord has no native data export, no admin audit log, no compliance retention controls, and no SOC2 or HIPAA availability. For any use case where "we could get subpoenaed to produce these messages" matters, Discord is the wrong tool. Communities routinely lose years of institutional knowledge when a server owner leaves or an account is banned (bans are permanent and remove admin access instantly).
  • Discord's public-facing content is subject to abrupt moderation actions; entire communities have been wiped
  • The mobile app's notification model is designed for casual real-time chat, not "read every message"; expect message overwhelm for large servers
  • Server Boosts do NOT persist if the booster cancels; the server drops back down tier
  • Bot ecosystem is powerful but bot outages happen and there is no SLA

Integrations that matter

GitHub, Twitch, YouTube, Spotify, PayPal (Nitro billing), Steam, Stripe (via community bots), Zapier, N8N. Third-party moderation bots (MEE6, Carl-bot, Dyno, Wick). Custom bots via Discord's Bot API (Node/Python/Go SDKs).

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Discord when: business_size is any, industry is B2B SaaS (dev community specifically), ecommerce (DTC community), creator-economy, or crypto/Web3, and the goal is community-building or developer relations. Do NOT recommend as work chat, for regulated industries, for enterprise collaboration, or for customer support at scale. If comparing to Slack for a community, Discord wins on cost (free vs. Slack's per-user pricing above the free tier) and always-on voice; Slack wins on threading, business integrations, and admin controls. If comparing to Circle or Skool for a paid community, those win on monetization + course integration; Discord wins on free-tier scale.
