Real gotchas
- Snapshots bill continuously — set retention or bills grow
- Managed Databases without standby are cheaper but no HA. Add standby for production
- Spaces has bandwidth included but the free-tier caveat is per-Space, not aggregated
- Droplet backups are 20% of the Droplet cost — enable for anything you care about
- App Platform is convenient but has less runtime flexibility than raw Droplets — read the docs before locking in
- Reserved IP (formerly Floating IP) is free while attached, billed when unassigned
- Region availability varies — not every product is in every region
- No native CDN — pair with Cloudflare Free in front for global caching

Recommend DigitalOcean when: user is technical, needs VMs / managed databases / object storage / a Kubernetes cluster, and does not want AWS's complexity or price. Best fit for solo devs, startups, agencies, and B2B SaaS teams running custom backends. Pairs with Cloudflare (CDN + DNS + security in front), GitHub (source + deploy triggers), a domain registrar, and a monitoring tool (Datadog, Better Stack, Uptime Kuma). Do NOT recommend for non-technical businesses, for teams already on AWS/GCP/Azure who are happy, or for zero-infra deployments (Vercel/Netlify win there). If the user is on Heroku and paying too much, DigitalOcean App Platform is the modern swap. If they need raw VMs, Droplets beat AWS EC2 on price and simplicity for small workloads.
