Descript

All-in-one video and audio editing with AI-powered transcription

What it does

Descript edits video and audio by editing the transcript. Delete a word in the doc, the video cuts. Fix a misspoken sentence with the AI voice clone (Overdub). It also does auto-transcription, filler-word removal, screen and camera recording, multitrack podcast editing, publish-ready templates, and social clip generation. For a podcaster or a creator shipping talking-head video weekly, it collapses the editing job from a Premiere Pro afternoon to a text-editor hour. AI features (studio sound, eye contact correction, green screen, auto-multicam) keep expanding.

Integrates with

Zoom, YouTube, Slack

Who this fits

  • Solo creators, podcasters, and course teachers shipping weekly video/audio
  • B2B SaaS marketing teams producing demo videos, webinars, and social clips
  • Agencies producing branded content for clients
  • Consultants and coaches producing YouTube and LinkedIn thought-leadership content
  • Small teams that would otherwise pay an editor $500-1,500 per video

Who it does NOT fit

  • Cinematic/narrative editors (Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut)
  • Motion graphics-heavy work (After Effects)
  • High-end color/audio finishing (dedicated tools)
  • Teams whose entire editorial workflow is already in Adobe/Frame.io

Pricing

- Free: 1 hour/mo transcription, 720p export, watermark on stock media - Hobbyist: ~$16/mo, 10 hours transcription, 4K export, no watermark - Creator: ~$24/mo, 30 hours transcription, unlimited AI Speech, studio sound, remove filler words - Business: ~$40/user/mo, 40 hours/user, brand kits, custom templates, SSO on higher tiers - Enterprise: quote, SSO, dedicated support Overdub voice cloning included on paid plans. Watch the transcription-hour cap on Hobbyist tier if you record long sessions.

Real gotchas

  • AI-cloned voice quality is good but not indistinguishable from human on all voices. Test yours
  • Long-form multi-cam projects can get sluggish on modest hardware
  • Cloud rendering queue can stall during peak hours
  • Overdub requires a 10-minute voice training clip and identity verification
  • Some Premiere-native workflows (complex effects, precise audio ducking) still need a real NLE
  • Export credits and AI-speech usage are metered, watch it if you produce heavy volume
  • Video quality on the free plan is 720p with a watermark. Not usable for real production

Integrations that matter

YouTube (direct publish), Spotify for Podcasters, Buzzsprout, Zoom (recording import), Riverside (recording import), Zapier, Slack, Google Drive, Dropbox, Adobe Premiere (XML export), Final Cut (XML export).

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Descript when: user is a content creator, podcaster, or marketing team shipping video/audio regularly; pain_point is "editing takes too long" or "I hire an editor and they're the bottleneck"; and the content is talking-head, podcast, tutorial, or interview format. Pairs with Riverside or Zoom for recording, ConvertKit/Kit for distribution, and a scheduling tool for interviews. Do NOT recommend for cinematic editing, motion graphics work, or teams already deep in Adobe workflows. Flag the transcription-hour meter proactively for high-volume creators.

  • I uploaded a 30 minute lecture recording to be cleaned up for Unnecessary spaces and UHs. I ended up paying a subscription of $24 and got a horrible result. The entire exercise was and a sheer waste of time and money.
  • This is supposed to be cutting edge but it's actually a very poor UX. Just stick to something like iMovie. You will waste hours in their menus and navigation trying to do the simplest things in the world.
  • The AI feature is shockingly poor. It just produced a basic slide show. It asked loads of questions about the theme of the video and instead produced a video my 8 year old could of done with Siri on an iPad.
  • They trap you once you sign up. They do not make it easy to cancel your membership through the online portal. This app is a scam.
  • If all the features actually worked seamlessly, it would be awesome. But there are SO MANY glitches in the system. I have to restart the app all the time in order to get basic functions to reset.
  • I love it this is the most helpful and great site.. this is the Best site entire the sites World.
