How to set up DaVinci Resolve

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

Read these before you start

• The Free tier is genuinely fully functional, most editors never need Studio unless they hit specific limits (4K H.265 export, neural engine features, temporal NR, HDR, 10-bit)
• Free is capped at UHD (3840x2160) export at up to 60fps, Studio unlocks higher framerates and 4K DCI (4096x2160)
• Fusion (node-based VFX) is powerful but has a different mental model than After Effects, existing AE users hit friction
• Speech-to-text transcription is Studio-only
• H.265 hardware decoding on Free is limited on some GPUs, Studio unlocks the full codec set
• Collaborative editing (multi-user on the same project) is Studio-only and requires a shared database (Postgres) setup

The 7-step setup

   Create your DaVinci Resolve account

   Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

   Open DaVinci Resolve signup

   Complete the initial onboarding

   Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If DaVinci Resolve pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

   Connect your existing tools

   Wire DaVinci Resolve into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Native import from most cameras (RED, ARRI, Sony, Canon, Blackmagic), Frame.io integration, Dropbox, Google Drive. Blackmagic hardware (Speed Editor, DaVinci Advanced Panel, ATEM switchers). Round-trip with Pro Tools via AAF, XML/EDL exchange with Premiere/FCP. No native cloud collaboration like Ado.... Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

   Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

   Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how DaVinci Resolve deployments die in month 3.

   Set up your first real workflow

   Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in DaVinci Resolve - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

   Add your team (if applicable) and set access

   Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

   Compound with the right pairings

   Recommend DaVinci Resolve Free when: user needs professional-quality video editing without subscription cost, or is a colorist by trade. Recommend paying $295 for Studio when they need speech-to-text transcription, HDR, higher-fps 4K, or multi-user collaboration. Highest fit for agencies producing polished long-form or commercial video, filmmakers, and any team that refuses Adobe's rental model. Do NOT recommend for casual social/mobile creators (CapCut wins), or for teams tightly bound to Adobe...
