How to set up Coda

Read these before you start

• **The Doc Maker pricing model is genuinely different from Notion and can be dramatically cheaper for teams where few people create content and many people just read** - a 6-person team with 1 Doc Maker + 5 editors pays roughly $36/month on Coda Team vs $144/month on Notion, and a 100-person team with 15 Doc Makers pays ~$450/month on Coda Team vs ~$2,000/month on Notion Business (Zapier Coda vs Notion comparison and Zite Coda vs Notion, 2026). The pricing flips: if everyone creates docs, Notion is usually cheaper.
• Migration off Coda is harder than off Notion - Coda's app-like structures do not export cleanly.
• Search across many docs is weaker than Notion's cross-workspace search.
• Mobile apps are functional but Coda is desktop-first - editing complex docs on a phone is painful.
• Packs (integrations) that used to be free are increasingly paywalled.

The 7-step setup

   Create your Coda account

   Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

   Complete the initial onboarding

   Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Coda pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

   Connect your existing tools

   Wire Coda into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Slack, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Jira, GitHub, Figma, Notion, Airtable, Zapier, Make, HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoom, native REST API, webhooks. Packs are the model - some are free, some cost per user, most are useful.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

   Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

   Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Coda deployments die in month 3.

   Set up your first real workflow

   Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Coda - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

   Add your team (if applicable) and set access

   Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

   Compound with the right pairings

   Recommend Coda when: business_size is 5-50, team is building internal tools or a source-of-truth doc (OKRs, project trackers, hiring pipelines, client dashboards), team has a data-literate PM or ops person who will own it, AND the team has fewer active creators than viewers (this is where Coda's pricing wins).
