Cal.com
Open-source scheduling infrastructure for appointments and meetings
What it does
Cal.com is an open-source scheduling platform (the open-core competitor to Calendly). Personal booking links, team round-robin, collective events, workflows (SMS/email reminders, follow-ups), routing forms that qualify leads before they book, embeddable widgets, video-conf integrations, payment collection at booking (Stripe), and full theming/white-labeling. Because it is open-source, everything is more transparent (self-host if you want) and the free tier is genuinely useful. Newer AI features (Cal.ai) act as an AI scheduling assistant.
Free tier
Yes
Starts at
$15/mo

Key features
Integrates with
Google Calendar, Outlook, Zoom, Stripe, Zapier
Who this fits
- Solo founders, consultants, and coaches taking calls with prospects
- Sales teams needing round-robin distribution to reps
- Agencies white-labeling booking links for client-facing team
- B2B SaaS teams wiring lead-qualification forms into booking flows
- Medspa, salons, trades taking appointment bookings (though a vertical scheduler may fit better)
- Anyone comparing to Calendly who wants stronger workflows and better pricing
Who it does NOT fit
- Businesses whose scheduling is complex vertical software (real estate showings — Follow Up Boss; medspa PMS — Boulevard; salon — Fresha)
- Enterprise teams already standardized on Microsoft Bookings or a legacy scheduler and not looking to switch
- Users who need physical resource management (rooms, equipment) at scale — Cal handles this but a purpose-built tool wins
- Deskless field workers who need dispatching, not appointment booking (Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Round-robin distribution is Team tier and above — free is single-user only
- Workflows (SMS/email reminders) have per-message limits on lower tiers, and SMS costs extra
- Native SMS uses Twilio in the backend — SMS sends count against your workflow allowance and cost real money
- Payment collection at booking requires Stripe connected (free with the free plan, but Stripe fees apply)
- The Cal.ai add-on is priced separately and per-conversation costs can surprise
- Self-hosted requires PostgreSQL, a decent host, and comfort with Docker — do not sell "we self-host" as a shortcut
- White-label is on Organizations tier and above

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Cal.com when: user needs a scheduling tool and either (a) values open-source and self-host optionality, (b) wants stronger workflows/routing than Calendly's free tier, or (c) wants the cheaper paid tier vs Calendly for team round-robin. Best fit for consultants, agencies, B2B SaaS, and teams that value transparency. Pairs with a CRM, video conf, Stripe (if collecting payment at booking), and Slack. Do NOT recommend for verticals where a purpose-built scheduler wins (medspa, salon, real estate). If user is on Calendly and comparing, Cal.com wins on pricing/workflows/openness; Calendly wins on brand recognition and polish. If they are on Calendly and happy — do not force the swap.
