Marketing & Funnels - Setup Guide
How to set up Buffer
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Very low. Connect each social account via OAuth, done in 15 minutes. Composing and scheduling posts is intuitive. Analytics and inbox take a few hours to learn.
Read these before you start
- Buffer's per-channel pricing scales linearly with connected accounts. A social team managing 15 accounts pays 15x the per-channel rate; at that scale Sprout or Hootsuite may be cheaper per seat [source: buffer.com/pricing].
- Instagram publishing requires the account to be a Business or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page. Personal accounts cannot use scheduled publishing (Meta API limit, not Buffer's fault).
- Buffer's analytics are shallower than Sprout Social's. Fine for solo, thin for agency reporting.
- The engagement inbox (replying to comments and DMs) is Essentials+ and does not cover all platforms equally (Instagram DMs work, TikTok comments limited).
- Removed features quietly over the years: Buffer Reply was discontinued and merged back; the AI Assistant added in 2023 is metered on paid tiers.
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Buffer account
Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.
Open Buffer signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Buffer pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Buffer into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Canva (design integration for post creation), Unsplash, Zapier, Google Analytics, Google Drive, IFTTT, WordPress, Shopify (limited), Meta Business Suite (native), LinkedIn (native).. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Buffer deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Buffer - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Default recommendation for solo founders and small businesses (under 6 social channels) that want low-cost, reliable social scheduling without agency features. Recommend Later when the client is Instagram-heavy or visual-first. Recommend Hootsuite when the client already uses it and wants inbox and listening. Recommend Sprout Social when the client is an agency or enterprise needing deep analytics and CRM-grade inbox.
Pricing you'll hit
- **Free:** 3 social channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, basic publishing. Enough for solo social presence. - **Essentials:** $6/month per channel (billed annually), unlimited scheduling, analytics, engagement inbox. - **Team:** $12/month per channel, adds unlimited team members with approval workflows. - **Agency:** $120/month for 10 channels, then $6 per additional, for agencies managing m...
