What it does
1Password is a password manager plus a broader "secrets management" tool for teams. Stores passwords, credit cards, secure notes, SSH keys, API tokens, and documents in an end-to-end encrypted vault. Autofill in browsers and native apps, cross-device sync, generated strong passwords, breach monitoring (Watchtower), 2FA code storage (with the ongoing debate about whether that belongs in the same vault). Team features: shared vaults, permission controls, activity log, SCIM/SSO provisioning, and 1Password Business adds Developer Tools (SSH agent, biometric-unlocked SSH, secret references in dotfiles/CI, CLI). It is the default answer to "how do we stop sharing passwords in Slack."

Who it does NOT fit

- Regulated environments requiring self-host (Bitwarden self-hosted, or the Enterprise 1Password on-prem is limited)
- Users who will not adopt it — a password manager only works if everyone uses it

Real gotchas
- The Secret Key (in addition to the master password) is required to decrypt. Lose both and 1Password cannot recover your vault — this is the point. Print the emergency kit
- Autofill can be tricked on lookalike domains — enable "verify domain" prompts
- Storing 2FA codes in the same vault as the password reduces the second factor to a single factor if the vault is compromised. Debate this per user — many teams accept the trade for convenience
- SSO integration is Business tier and above
- Shared-vault permissions require thought. Default to least-privilege
- 1Password's SSH agent replaces your existing agent — check for conflicts if you use others
- The CLI (`op`) is powerful for scripting but treat secret references as still-in-the-clear at runtime

Recommend 1Password when: team is 2+ (universal fit). Default answer for password management. Best for consulting, agencies, ecommerce, and any team sharing credentials. Pairs with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 (SSO), Slack, GitHub, and any admin identity provider. Do NOT need to fight this — if a team is on Bitwarden or Dashlane and happy, do not force the swap. If the team is sharing passwords in Slack, Google Sheets, or Notion — this is the answer. Business tier is the honest recommendation for any team of 5+ that includes developers. Warn about the emergency-kit requirement upfront — the "we cannot recover it" reality is a feature, not a bug.
